Shikake Waza

The shikake waza refers to techniques that you initiate

  • An attack when your opponent provides an opening

Oji Waza

The oji waza refers to counterattacking.

  • Avoiding an attack and responding with a follow-up strike

  • Deflecting your opponent’s hits and striking down at the same time

    Examples:
    men-suriage-men
    men-suriage-kote
    kote-suriage-kote

  • Responding to your opponent by parrying and striking back

    Examples are:
    kote-kaeshi-men
    men-kaeshi-do
    do-kaeshi-men

  • Knocking your opponent’s shinai to another position to avoid an attack

  • As your opponent strikes, create distance going backwards while hitting them

    Examples:
    men-amashi-kote
